Frankie Leona Jones, 89, died at her home on November 4, 2019 in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Frankie was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the sixth child of Frank and Mattie Lander on August 3, 1930.

Frankie was the youngest of six girls and lived her entire life in Minneapolis. She graduated from South High School and attended the University of Minnesota. After college, she began working for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. While working and saving for college, she met her one and only soulmate, Jewel, and they married on June 21, 1952. After leaving the telephone company, she began her career at Northwest Airlines and her love of travel. Her desire to show her family the world and along with Pop, the family was able to visit three countries in Africa, Europe, Bahamas and the United States, including Hawaii.

When her husband became an engineer for Burlington Northern Railroad the family relocated to Cheyenne in 1978. Frankie began working for the second time with the telephone company in Cheyenne and worked there until her retirement. However, following retirement she did not slow down and was very active in civic, community and church activities. She was active and held several leadership soles in the charitable organization Love and Charity. Frankie, along with her husband Jewel, started the African American Wellness Project and had offices in downtown Cheyenne along with a mobile health van that traveled the entire state of Wyoming talking to all Wyomingites about health concerns, blood pressure checks, illegal drug use, HIV awareness, diabetes awareness, and making all Wyoming residents aware of resources for healthcare and mental health care for under served communities. She and her husband were awarded nationally for the volunteer work they did for all the citizens of Wyoming. Frankie was an active member of Allen Chapel AME Church in Cheyenne for 40 years.

Frankie is survived by three children, Matthew, Jewell Diane and Pamela; four grandchildren, Mathias, Sean, Summer, Tiffany; five grandchildren, Breanna, Mekhi, A’jyla, Kennedy and MyQura; and
a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends from around the country.

Frankie was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Jewel Jones, Jr.; five sisters, Chris Banham Gladys Dye, Ernestine Perry, Dorothy Jones and Verna Mae Groce; and grandson, Tyese Jones

My sincere condolences to the Jones family. I was fortunate to work with Frankie in the Cheyenne Mountain Bell office years ago. I always admired Frankie’s outlook on life, her love of her family, her laughter, and genuine personality. I lost contact with her when I moved but not surprised at her giving’s of life there after. RIP Frankie. You were a great woman!
